Web 'developers' are essentially the most technically trained of all. As well as a sound grasp of 'HTML', XML & CSS, web developers will understand other respected programming-languages such as 'VB', 'PHP', Java, 'C#' and 'ASP.Net' etc. They will generally also possess a strong understanding of 'SQL' Database technology, since this is how the majority of substantial sites store their information. In reality, it's un-likely that a large e-commerce web-site has been created in layout form by a bunch of web designers. Rather, a place-holder 'template' will have been developed, and the details will be dynamically fed from a database. So apart from significantly greater efficiency with the web-site build, using this method also makes for a more uniform look & feel as well.

It's essential to realise that even the most effective web design courses can only teach you the methods & processes - none of them will be able to turn you in to a bona fide web designer. All through your study and training, you have got to spend time constructing and developing as many sites as possible, to prepare & build your portfolio. Your sites can be about anything you like - the local music scene, farm pets, an author you admire or performance cars. Start to build inter-active sites and create 'traffic' to them. All this will look more constructive on your CV, & in your portfolio, than a qualification from Adobe will!

A so-called advisor who doesn't dig around with lots of question - the likelihood is they're really a salesperson. If they're pushing towards a particular product before understanding your background and current experience level, then you know it's true. If you've got a strong background, or even a touch of work-based experience (some industry qualifications maybe?) then it's more than likely your starting point will be different from someone who is just starting out. For those students embarking on IT studies as a new venture, it's often a good idea to ease in gradually, beginning with some basic PC skills training first. This can easily be incorporated into any study program.
